The National Federation of the Blind of Hawaii Announces the 2023-2024 Scholarship Deadline of September 1, 2023

The National Federation of the Blind of Hawaii (NFBH) is pleased to announce that applications for our annual scholarships are now being accepted for any blind or visually impaired individual attending or planning to attend a post-secondary institution. This may include undergraduate or graduate college, business, or trade school, during the 2023-2024 school year.  Scholarship winners may be attending our annual State Convention, as well as monthly chapter meetings. The deadline for the receipt of applications and supporting documents is September 1, 2023 midnight HST.

Requirements

Application Requirements:

1. The deadline for receipt of the application and all supporting documents is September 1, 2023, at midnight, HST.
2. The application may be submitted online by clicking the link below.
3. All supporting documents should be emailed to the Chair of the Scholarship committee.
4. Faxed copies will not be accepted. Preferred file formats are. DOCX and . DOC, if possible.
5. The applicant must be blind or visually impaired in both eyes. Certification to this fact must be emailed by an eye doctor or Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor.
6. NFBH scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic excellence, financial need, and community service. Some of this may be discussed in the applicant’s personal essay.
7. Submit proof of full-time enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year. An unofficial transcript or an acceptance letter are both examples of proof of enrollment. These should be emailed directly to the Scholarship Committee Chair.
8. The term ‘post-secondary institution” refers to undergraduate or graduate college, business school, or trade school.
9. A personal essay from the applicant, not exceeding 700 words, should be emailed in the preferred file format to Scholarship Committee Chair. The essay should address your reasons for attending the post-secondary program you chose, your career goals, your past, and present leadership experience, and how your use of blindness skills and accessibility have shaped your life decisions.
10. Two letters of recommendation should be emailed (in the preferred file formats) by the writers directly to Scholarship Committee Chair. These letters should be written by people who can speak to your academic/employment performance, leadership skills, extracurricular activities, community service, and personal character. Professors, supervisors, religious officials, community leaders, and vocational rehab counselors are examples of people who may write a letter of recommendation.
11. Current transcript from institution now attending and transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions attended.  These official transcripts should be emailed directly by the institutions.
12. If you have not yet attended such an institution or have not completed one year of study, have your high school email official transcripts.
13. Please provide a curriculum vitae or resume.
14. Winners must agree to attend the 2023 NFBH State Convention, if possible,  and at least 2 monthly chapter meetings. Chapter meetings are held monthly by Zoom, in-person, or as hybrids, depending on the chapter.
